Essentials: Driver’s License Requirements

According to the Federal Regulations you need a CDL if you participate in the intrastate, interstate or foreign commerce and drive a:

1) Vehicle which has a GVWR of 26,001 lbs.
                                                   OR
2) Has a GVWR of 26,001 lbs. or more inclusive of a towed unit with a GVWR of more than 10,000 lbs.
                                                   OR
3) Is used to transport hazardous materials in an amount requiring placarding under the Hazardous Materials Transportation Act regardless of size.

FMCSA has set standards for the testing and licensing of commercial vehicle drivers. A part of the requirement is that a driver must pass a knowledge and skills test for the type of vehicle that he/she will be operating. So if you plan on driving a truck with air brakes, you need to pass a knowledge test on air brakes, and you would need to use a vehicle with air brakes for your skills test; otherwise, it will be a restriction on your CDL.
