Getting Started: Finding a company to contract with

WHO AM I GOING TO LEASE TO?

This is a very important step. Not that you can’t change whenever you want to, but keep in mind each time you switch companies, you cost yourself time and money. It’s important to select a company you feel confident that you will be with for a while.

There are many companies out there to choose from. Each one has something different to offer. Talk to some of their drivers.  That’s the best way to get a feel for what it would be like to work for them.  Of course, you have the option to drive for someone who is already leased to a company. This is a way to get your feet wet (greasy in our industry ) before investing in equipment.

Here are a few questions to ask each company:

1) What size units do they utilize the most?
2) How many units do they currently have and how many of each size?
3) What states do they operate in?
4) Who pays for certain expenses?
5) Policies with regard to deadhead miles

To help you get started with your search for expedite carriers you can visit www.expeditecompanies.com where we list some of the companies you can contact that are seeking business minded entrepreneurs like you.

Being an owner/operator involves running your own business.  This takes a lot of commitment. As an entrepreneur, you will be exposed to working long hours, physical and emotional demands, financial planning, working with many different personalities, and a lot of record keeping.  It is important for you to consider how this will affect you and your family.  One of the keys to success in anything you pursue is your motivation, positive attitude, knowledge of what you’re doing, enjoying what you’re doing and most importantly being aware of what you consider the worst things that could happen, like not being profitable, and you must be able to accept the consequences. You have to say “if this is all that comes out of my efforts, then that’s O.K.” and move on.
