The expedited freight transportation industry has seen a tremendous growth within the last several years. What has created the demand for this type of service is the modification of companies inventory practices. Most companies have gone to a minimal on-hand inventory to cut down the various costs associated with storing and maintaining large inventories; therefore, creating a need for just-in-time freight. Although expedited freight transportation tends to be more costly than regular ground freight, it is still, for most, more cost effective than keeping large inventories on site.
Some of the demands of the expedite industry include exclusive use truck service for certain freight and the transporting of critical equipment that would otherwise shut many companies down if not delivered in an immediate time criteria. Hence the growth of time-sensitive freight transportation.
