Essentials: Permits

One thing that may ease your mind is most of the time when you lease to a company, they supply the necessary permits to operate a commercial vehicle within the states they have authority for interstate and intrastate commerce.  Who pays for this is between you and the company you lease to but typically the expedite carrier pays for the operating permits.

You can get your own authority (which costs $300+ other fees). If you are going to mainly concentrate on transporting freight available through the company you are leased to, then getting your own authority would not be a beneficial expense. However if you plan on finding your own freight and being your own broker, then you would need to obtain your own authority certificates and in that case you would not likely lease to a carrier. Make sure you completely research all the liabilities and requirements involved before you consider doing that. If you will only be operating one truck or even a small fleet of 2 or 3 units, it may not be worth the headaches of operating under your own authority.

Even though you are provided with the operating permits by the carrier, it’s still a good idea for you to be aware of the permits necessary for the states you travel in and the type of freight you haul so that you are not caught by DOT officers without them. Remember, you as the operator of the commercial vehicle are subject to the fine if you do not have the proper permits.
