 Getting Started: Regulations

WHAT REGULATIONS APPLY TO ME?

Commercial transportation of freight, whether by van, straight truck or tractor trailer, is governed by federal and state regulations. It is important to remember that while the federal guidelines are enforceable throughout the United States, there are state regulations as well which may supersede in certain circumstances. A motor carrier road atlas is a good thing to carry with you in your vehicle.  It provides information on size and weight limitations, low clearances and restricted routes. The Federal and State transportation regulations require special training and or licenses for freight transportation and the operation of vehicles used to transport freight categorized by the type and size of vehicle. In certain circumstances regardless of the size vehicle you operate you will be required to have a commercial drivers license (CDL).

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (www.fmcsa.gov) provides specific information concerning the rules and regulations involved in operating a commercial vehicle. For state regulations you can contact your State Department Of Transportation.

Remember, in order to do your job, it involves being in an environment with many obstacles such as sharing the road with the general public, battling the forces of Mother Nature, road construction and dealing with our own human nature.  For these reasons and more, the federal and state agencies have implemented regulations, but predominantly for the safety of everyone.
