Essentials: Your Vehicle License

It is important to be aware of the regulations for registering your vehicle with your state. Some people consider this as one of the deciding factors when choosing the size vehicle they want to operate.

WHAT IS IRP? The INTERNATIONAL REGISTRATION PLAN

For commercial vehicles traveling in two or more states (with IRP jurisdiction), IRP allows you to apply for registration and a license plate with your base state (base meaning where you mainly operate out of) and you would then list the states you will travel within the registration year.

The fee you are charged is based on the miles traveled through each state from the prior reporting year.  If it is your first year, you pay based on the estimate of miles you think you will travel. The way your IRP plate fee is determined is something like this:

Let’s say you plan to travel 100,000 total miles for the year, here is how the fee would be apportioned:

40,000 in Ohio       = 40% of total miles x base plate fee
30,000 in Indiana  = 30%                    "
25,000 in Illinois     = 25%                   "
  5,000 in Missouri =  5%                   "
The sum of each apportioned state fee based on their %
= Equals your registration fee

This is just a simplified example. For detailed information contact the agency in your base state that handles the IRP registrations.

In most states the criteria for apportioned vehicles is any vehicle used for transporting property for profit and has a gross vehicle weight of 26,000 lbs., or a vehicle with three or more axles regardless of weight, or a power unit used in combination with another and together exceeds 26,000 lbs.
